Why Athletes With Braces Need Mouth Guards

Braces are a huge investment of both your time and money. It takes years to get you teeth as straight as possible, and if you unduly present your braces to damaging situations, you run the risk of damaging your braces. For athletes especially who play contact sports, your braces are at even more of a risk.

That’s why all athletes wearing braces need a mouth guard.

If you participate in contact sports, you should talk to your orthodontist at Advanced Center for Orthodontics about being fitted for a custom mouth guard. These mouthguards are designed to fit in your mouth comfortably and allow for ease of breathing.

If you do have something break or come loose, you can secure it in the special orthodontic wax you were given when you were first fitted for braces. This will help to protect your mouth until you can get into Advanced Center for Orthodontics for an appointment to repair the damage.

Our team here at Advanced Center for Orthodontics can help you if your braces break, or if you think the particular sport you’re playing requires a mouth guard in order to protect your braces. If you’re not sure whether or not your sport requires a mouth guard to protect your braces, call us today at 732-308-0022 so we can answer your questions.
